Hotel owners in South Africa facing financial disaster as football fans fail to book up for World Cup

HOTEL owners in South Africa will miss out on a predicted World Cup bookings boom.


Organisers FIFA had expected 450,000 overseas fans to flood to the event, which begins in June.

Their latest estimate is just 350,000 - and some hotels have had their bookings halved by FIFA's official travel agents.

Supporters have been put off by the high cost of airfares to South Africa.

Adjusted Funds from Operation (“AFFO”) in the first quarter was a loss of $(1.2) million, compared to $1.2 million in the first quarter of 2009. AFFO per diluted common share and limited partnership unit was a loss of $(0.01) compared to $0.02 for the same quarter of 2009. AFFO per share was impacted by an increase in the Company’s weighted average fully diluted share count to approximately 108.8 million in the first quarter of 2010 from approximately 56.5 million in the comparable quarter of 2009.

Insolvencies of hotels soar 61% over the last year

The number of hotel companies going bust soared by 61% to 122 in the 12 months to December 31 2009, according to new figures from accountancy firm Wilkins Kennedy.

Wilkins Kennedy says that although the overall UK economy returned to growth in Q4 2009, this hasn't yet reflected in the insolvency figures. Nor did 2010 get off to a good start with the bad weather in January and the recent turmoil caused by the volcanic ash crisis.

Shatner UP $600M on Priceline

LOS ANGELES — If anyone has noticed the soaring share price of Priceline.com, it’s an easy bet that Canadian actor William Shatner had something to do with it.

Unofficial word on Wall Street is that Shatner, who was initially paid in Priceline shares when he became pitchman for the Internet travel website startup in 1997, is now worth a cool $600 million.

No wonder he looked so happy singing a duet of Total Eclipse of the Heart on Lopez Tonight the other week.

KFC Pushes Into France

NEW YORK--Yum Brands Inc.'s KFC brand is plotting a deeper move into France, hoping that the Colonel's recipe will strike the taste of a broader swath of French consumers.

This week, KFC launched its first round of national television advertisements in France as it gets set to open its 100th store there, giving it the scale needed for a broad marketing push. KFC plans to have 300 stores in France by 2015, and sees a possible tenfold increase over time.

"One day I'd like to have over 1,000 stores here, though we're going to take it 100 by 100" at a time, Ivan Schofield, general manager of KFC France, said in an interview.

4 convicted in Greece for hotel poisoning deaths

ATHENS, Greece — A court on the Greek holiday island of Corfu convicted four people Tuesday in the fatal carbon monoxide poisoning of two British children at a local luxury hotel in 2006.


The hotel manager, a senior maintenance official and the hotel electrician — all Greeks — each received seven-year prison sentences for negligent manslaughter and causing injury by negligence, court officials said.
