Spanish Hotel Chain Ratifies Leadership in Cuba

(Hospitality Business News) Spanish hotel chain Sol Melia ratified in 2010 its leadership in the Cuban tourist industry with the opening of its 25th hotel, the  Meliá Buenavista, in Santa Maria Key, and now runs 21 percent of the Cuba’s lodgement capacity.

 President of Sol Melia Cuba Operation Gabriel Garcia said the Spanish chain is interested in expanding its operations in Cuba, where 31 percent of the four and five star hotels are run by them.

In 20 years of operations Melia has lodged over 50 million tourists in Cuba and has contributed some 3.7 billion dollars.

He said that 30 percent of the two million visitors a year to Cuba prefer to stay at the Melia hotels.

The chain has received several international and domestic awards for the quality of its services, especially for the work of its best hotels that include Melia Cohiba in Havana, Meliá Varadero and Tryp Península Varadero in that beach resort, among others.

On May 10, 1990, Melia started its operations in Cuba with the opening of the Sol Palmeras in Varadero. Nowadays it has 10,444 rooms throughout the country.

Sol Melia to open second London hotel

The Spanish chain has acquired a building in Holborn, near Trafalgar Square, and will open the hotel in 2012.


The ME London will offer 173 rooms in four different categories and a 730sqm convention centre.

The hotel will also offer restaurants and bars and will be Sol Meliá’s second hotel in London, joining the Meliá White House.

Sol Melia sells the Sol Pelicanos Ocas

The hotel company Sol Meliá reported today that it has sold the Sol Pelícanos Ocas Hotel in Benidorm, Alicante for 73.75 million euros, generating capital gains of 55.6 million euros for the hotel chain.


Sol Meliá will continue to manage the hotel under a 10-year lease agreement and will also retain a preferential purchase option on the hotel.

Sol Melia opens in Atalnta

A Spanish hospitality firm that is a major player in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean plans to put its first U.S. flag in Atlanta.

Sol Meliá Hotels & Resorts will take over the management and flag of the 502-room Renaissance Atlanta Hotel Downtown.

Wyndham Completes TRYP Acquisition From Sol Melia

Wyndham Hotel Group to Acquire Tryp Hotel Brand from Sol Meliá

PARSIPPANY, N.J. (June 7, 2010) –Wyndham Worldwide (NYSE: WYN) today announced

that its Wyndham Hotel Group business unit has agreed to acquire the Tryp® hotel brand from
Sol Meliá Hotels & Resorts.

In addition, Wyndham will enter into a license agreement with the current 91 Tryp hotels located
throughout Europe and South America that will continue to be owned, operated, managed or
licensed by Sol Meliá. Wyndham Hotel Group and Sol Meliá will form a strategic alliance to
work together to develop the Tryp brand globally and market the hotels cooperatively through
their central reservations systems and loyalty programs
