That's just too low for such an affluent country, said Bruce Bommarito, executive vice president and chief operating officer for the U.S. Travel Association.
"Americans are comfortable in their own environment," Bommarito said.
There were 61.5 million trips outside the United States in 2009, down 3% from 2008, according to the Office of Travel and Tourism Industries. About 50% of those trips were to either Mexico or Canada, destinations that didn't require a passport until 2007.

Man Dies in Fall From Hotel in Midtown New York
A 23-year-old man died Sunday when he apparently fell from a fourth-floor landing at the Pennsylvania Hotel in midtown Manhattan, police said.
Moon G. Nam, of Jersey City, apparently became lost when he returned to the hotel, where he had spent the night with two friends, at about 6:00 a.m. to retrieve his cellphone that he forgot in his room, a law enforcement official with knowledge of the case said. He said surveillance video shows Mr. Nam taking a freight elevator to the fourth floor where he followed exit signs to the landing. Investigators believe he was looking for a fire escape or leaning over the guardrail when he fell.

Reader poll: 81% say no to hotel pay-per-view, go for 'free'
Echoing a decade-long decline in hotel movie rentals, 81% of the 2,357 people who responded to USA TODAY's latest traveler poll Thursday said they do not order hotel pay-per-view movies.
Specifically, 66% of respondents said that instead of renting a movie, they watch free programs on the TV set. Another 15% said that they used to rent movies, but today bring their own DVDs or watch movies online on their laptop or digital device

LodgeNet says outlook unchanged as some customers start to phase out Adult content
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--LodgeNet Interactive Corp. (LNET) said Wednesday that it "stands behind its guidance" and doesn't expect to see any impact on debt repayment, following an analyst report that said a hotel-chain customer is phasing out adult video offerings in its rooms.
LodgeNet's shares pared their losses in recent trading, down 17% to $3.42 after earlier falling as low as $2.88 on more than 12 times the average daily volume.
The company, which provides television and Internet services to hospitality and health-care businesses, said the hotel customer's policy change isn't expected to have any impact on its compliance with its debt covenant. A note from Craig-Hallum Capital Group Senior Research Analyst Frank McEvoy said there is an increasing likelihood the company could violate the covenant.
In the note, McEvoy said the firm had learned that one of LodgeNet's largest hotel customers has implemented a policy that prohibits adult video-on-demand movie offerings in its new hotel properties and bans the offerings at existing properties after its contracts with LodgeNet expire.
The firm said that, assuming about 50% of LodgeNet's guest entertainment revenue at these hotels is from adult titles, it estimates the annualized loss of revenue would be about $25 million, a small portion of which may have affected the second and third quarters of 2010.

Harrogate hotel named best in UK
A Harrogate hotel has been declared the 'Best of British' for the second year running.
Rudding Park was voted the best hotel in the UK at the ninth annual Travellers' Choice hotel awards. The awards are based on the ratings that individual properties have received on the TripAdvisor website which includes reviews by customers.
The independent hotel was the only property in Yorkshire to make the top 25.

Union changes coming to Freeport Bahamas
FREEPORT - The joining of the re-established Commonwealth Union of Hotel Services and Allied Workers Union with the Trade Union Congress represents the beginning of "something very unique" for the umbrella union, officials said.
The formerly defunct Commonwealth Union (CUHSAW), which was revived in late 2009 announced on Thursday that it will be joining the ranks of the Trade Union Congres (TUC).
TUC president Obie Ferguson said he is pleased with the Commonwealth Union's decision. He also noted that Customs and Immigration workers have also joined the organisation.
"I am satisfied that this is the beginning of something very unique," he said.

Greyhound teams up with the Expedia Affiliate Network
Bus service provider Greyhound is teaming up with the Expedia Affiliate Network in a deal that will allow it to offer hotel rooms on its website.
Greyhound that customers will be able to book bus tickets and hotel rooms across the U.S. directly through Greyhound.com.
"This partnership with Expedia Affiliate Network makes it easy for our customers to book a complete trip with Greyhound transportation and lodging," Greyhound President and CEO Dave Leach said in a statement.
Greyhound serves more than 3,800 locations. Expedia Affiliate Network is part of online travel company Expedia Inc.
Australia's Four Posts Hotel becomes an island paradise
THE Four Posts Hotel had an unusual problem last night when the water flowed faster than the beer.
The owners of the hotel, at Jarklin near Boort, were expecting a tense night as floodwaters rushed past the front door of the hotel.
Owner Kellie Hare said when they woke up on Sunday there was a "bit of water about". But by 1pm the pub was surrounded and last night it was landlocked. The publicans and thirsty locals chipped in to sandbag the back corner of the pub, which is posing the greatest threat.
The hotel was hoping to get another 3000 sandbags last night to reinforce its protection against the murky brown water slowly descending on it.

Complaining about loud, neighboring hotel guests can be a safety issue

China hotel fire kills 10
BEIJING, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- A fire broke out early Thursday in a hotel in China's Hunan province, killing at least 10 people, officials said.
The blaze was reported about 1 a.m. in the small Xinawan Hotel in the Yuelu district of the province's capital of Changsha, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Six of the victims died at the scene and four of the eight injured later died in a hospital, the report said, quoting a statement from the local government. The other four injured were reported in stable condition.

California business owners claim ADA lawsuit is simply extortion
MARYSVILLE, CA - Several local business owners are upset after three different lawsuits accused them of not being in compliance with the American Disabilities Act (ADA).
But they're not necessarily upset over the compliance issue - they're more upset about what they call extortion. George Louie, of West Sacramento, filed the lawsuits in Yolo County Court just before the turn of the New Year. The lawsuits cite the Budget Inn Hotel and Gary's Place Bar & Grill in Marysville as two businesses without handicapped parking. Budget Inn owner Hasmukl Patel immediately added a handicapped space to his parking lot, then called Louie.
"He said that was not all, he said 'You're going to have to pay something'. I said, 'How much' and he said 'I'll give you the holiday special for $5,000,'" according to Patel.

Man rides horse into Humpty Doo Hotel Bar
BAR staff at the Humpty Doo Hotel got a surprise on New Year's Eve when a patron rode a horse into the pub and ordered a beer.
Riding bareback and wearing no more than shorts and a pair of thongs, Trevor Yeend steered horse Elvis through the crowd and went straight for the bar.
The 48-year-old jockey said it was easier to ride to the bar than walk.
"I think people were a bit stunned," he said. "But it was just another night at the Humpty Doo pub I guess."

Hotel for the dead opens in Tokyo
TOKYO, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- A Tokyo non-profit has opened a storage facility for corpses awaiting funerals. It's billed as a "business hotel for the dead."
The LISS Center Shin-Kiba facility, which is run by funeral-arranging non-profit LISS System, can store up to 37 bodies in rooms with antibacterial lights, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Monday.
The rooms cost $88 per night and the center also offers assistance with arranging for morticians and setting up funerals.

Jamaica: Tourist dead, 10 hospitalised from food poisoning
KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) — An Argentinean tourist is dead while 10 other visitors to the island have been admitted to hospital in St Ann suffering from suspected food poisoning.
The group, which comprises tourists from the United States, Japan, Italy, as well as four visiting Jamaicans, was staying at a villa in the neighbouring parish of St Mary when they consumed a meal of fish and potato salad late last night. Following the meal they all became extremely ill.
They were rushed to hospital where a doctor confirmed that the Argentinean visitor had died. His identity was not released.
One of the other tourists is said to be in critical condition.
