Paris's luxury hotels brace for new Asian rivals

Reuters) - Luxury Parisian hotels are entering 2011 knowing they need a combative spirit and ambitious initiatives to protect their turf from the arrival of powerful Asian chains such as Shangri-La, Mandarin Oriental and Peninsula.
The three luxury Asian hotel groups have invested heavily to get a foothold in Paris, ranked as one of the world's top tourist destinations, prompting rival European five-star hotels to make major refurbishments and review their strategies.

Hong Kong to host eye-watering 900 US dollar meal

HONG KONG — Famously relaxed with conspicuous consumption, Hong Kong is set to host a dinner costing nearly 7,000 Hong Kong dollars (902 US dollars) per head, according to one of the city's hotels.
US-born chef Thomas Keller is being flown in by the Mandarin Oriental to cook for 450 diners -- in what the hotel says will be Hong Kong's most expensive meal this year.
A top-priced, 11-course dinner during Keller's November 29 to December 2 stay will set gourmands back 6,888 HK dollars each, excluding service. Slightly more frugal diners can enjoy lunch for just over 2,000 HK dollars.

Mandarin Owners See A Recovery

Istithmar World has no shortage of issues: It lost a Times Square office building to foreclosure and is trying to regain the foreclosed W Union Square hotel. Its embattled chief executive departed in January. And its parent, Dubai investment arm Dubai World, is trying to restructure $22 billion of debt.


Amid that upheaval, there's one trophy property that Istithmar refuses to part with despite the hefty costs of keeping it: the ritzy, 248-room Mandarin Oriental hotel in Manhattan's Time Warner Center.

Mandarin Oriental May Acquire Luxury Hotel Brands

Dec. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Mandarin Oriental International Ltd., operator of 25 luxury hotels from Tokyo to San Francisco, may buy more brands as lodging companies struggle amid a decline in spending, Chief Executive Officer Edouard Ettedgui said.
